Test the System Before Scaling
[!quote] Field Note Removing a bottleneck earns trust only when the mechanism is visible and the system’s failure modes are tested.
[!summary] The Reader Promise Learn how to test an access initiative or institutional framework before treating its promise as a result.
The Field Note
[!example] Name the bottleneck, then test the system Identify the constraint, show how the fix should work, assign review ownership, and test the obvious ways it could fail.
The World Bank Group reports that IFC announced a risk-sharing initiative for local financial institutions in emerging markets. The release says the initiative will initially provide up to $700 million in guarantees for part of credit-settlement risk. That supports a claim about the announced mechanism. It does not prove that projected payment growth or broader access will occur.
AACSB presents a research-impact framework and interpretive guidance for its business-education standards. The pages support a practical question: how will a claim move from research to a user, and how will a general standard become local evidence? The accessible pages do not prove improved research use, compliance, or educational outcomes.
Inversion supplies the review step. Ask what would make the initiative exclude people, hide weak evidence, or create false confidence. Then name the reviewer, the evidence to collect, and the result that would change the decision.
Use this sequence before scaling: name the bottleneck, map the mechanism, assign the reviewer, state the evidence gap, and test the failure conditions.
Mental Model Lens
[!tip] Thinking Tool Mental model: Inversion and The Power of Avoiding Stupidity Useful idea: Ask what would make the desired result fail, then remove preventable failure conditions first. Short quote: “Avoiding stupidity is easier than seeking brilliance.” Use today: Add one failure-mode question to the next launch, policy review, or case discussion.
