Find the Barrier Before You Scale

[!quote] Field Note Access is not the same as participation.

[!summary] The Reader Promise Use current examples to find where participation breaks, then build the support that lets people continue.

The Field Note

[!example] Practical frame Before adding a new program or tool, name the barrier that interrupts participation, the owner who can address it, and the evidence that would show the pathway is working.

UNESCO’s education report shows that global enrollment parity can coexist with concentrated completion and return-to-school barriers. Kauffman’s account of Project Choice shows that a valuable opportunity still required broader support around students. MIT Sloan’s analysis of AI adoption makes a similar point in workplace terms: access to a tool does not create value without redesigned work, preparation, and trust.

These are distinct institutional examples, not proof of one universal formula. They support a practical test: identify the point where people stop being able to continue, then redesign the surrounding system before widening the intervention. Measure persistence, completion, re-entry, or usable work, not access alone.

Mental Model Lens

[!tip] Thinking Tool Mental model: Focus and Diversification Useful idea: Competence creates options, but concentrated effort builds a position before diversification protects it. Use today: Name the one participation barrier that currently limits results, address it directly, and widen the intervention only after the evidence improves.

Use It Today

[!question] For Students Trace one learning pathway from entry to completion and identify the condition that could make a capable student stop.

[!question] For Managers And Founders Before adding a tool or initiative, identify the workflow, training, or trust gap that could keep people from using it well.

[!question] For Educators And Advisors Pair access measures with persistence, completion, and return measures so support is designed around where participation breaks down.
