Notice the Edge Before You Move
[!quote] Field Note A decision is safer to revise when the edge of its evidence is visible before the next consequence arrives.
[!summary] The Reader Promise Learn how to separate evidence, inference, and uncertainty before a headline, AI output, or metric drives your next decision.
The Field Note
[!example] Notice the Edge Before You Move Before acting on a vivid signal, write down what you know and what you are inferring. Then name what you cannot explain and what would make you revise.
AP’s current Business page lists a U.S.-Canada trade deal whose key terms remain unclear. AACSB argues that students should demonstrate independent reasoning before relying on AI-intensive coursework. Inside Higher Ed reports that 42% of colleges had not fully submitted required student-outcomes data. The report says those colleges faced a final chance before possible consequences.
Farnam Street’s circle-of-competence article supplies the connecting practice. Know the area of earned knowledge and notice when confidence is approaching its perimeter. The sources do not prove that the trade deal will produce a fixed business result. They do not prove that one AI-teaching design is best, that compliance improves student outcomes, or that this mental model guarantees better decisions.
They support a narrower move: make the evidence boundary visible before using a headline, model, or metric to move a decision.
[!note] Evidence Limit These sources are a current listing headline, a named-author teaching article, a dated higher-education report, and practitioner mental-model guidance. They do not form one causal test.
Mental Model Lens
[!tip] Thinking Tool Mental model: Mastering Success: Navigating Within Your Circle of Competence Useful idea: Competence includes knowing where earned knowledge ends and where confidence may outrun evidence. Use today: For one decision, mark the evidence, the inference, the unknown, and the person or test that could close the gap.
Use It Today
[!question] For Students Explain one AI-assisted conclusion without the tool and identify the evidence you still need.
[!question] For Managers And Founders Map one external policy exposure and define the trigger that would change the plan.
[!question] For Educators And Advisors Ask learners or leaders to name the edge of their evidence before they defend a recommendation.
