Test the Measure Before the Move
[!quote] Field Note A visible result becomes useful when its measure, owner, and next check are clear.
[!summary] The Reader Promise Learn to test a result by tracing what was counted, who can act, and what evidence comes next.
The Field Note
[!example] Practical frame Before acting on a result, name what was counted, what produced it, who owns the next move, and what would change the plan.
The Census Bureau’s construction-spending series shows why a number needs a definition. It also needs a reference period. Inside Higher Ed’s report on Carnegie Mellon’s $3 billion gift shows why a large commitment needs milestones, staffing, and governance. Gallup’s workplace research shows why AI adoption also depends on manager support. BEA’s release calendar shows why a new publication may describe an earlier period. It may later be revised.
These sources document an official survey estimate, an announced institutional plan, workplace survey findings, and a release listing. They do not prove one shared causal mechanism. They do not prove that Carnegie Mellon’s plan will succeed. They do not prove that manager support causes culture improvement. A release listing does not establish the underlying economic outcome. Use a practical test. Put the definition, reference period, owner, mechanism, and next check beside a result before acting on it.
Mental Model Lens
[!tip] Thinking Tool Mental model: Slop
Useful idea: Work that passes unexamined costs someone else time and trust.
Use today: Ask who will check the number, claim, or plan before it reaches the next person.
Use It Today

[!question] For Managers And Founders Name the owner, mechanism, feedback measure, and revision trigger before acting on a result.
[!question] For Educators And Advisors Ask learners to separate what the evidence shows from what they would still need to verify.
