Make the Measure Explain the Move
[!quote] Field Note A measure earns trust when it helps someone choose the next move.
[!summary] The Reader Promise Use today’s examples to test whether a measure, workflow, pathway, or setback can guide the next decision.
The Field Note
[!example] Try this Before changing course, name the measure, show the work behind it, find the support gap, and define the next check.
MIT Sloan’s October 20 article on systematic innovation with AI recommends smaller tasks, visible workflows, human decision responsibility, and review steps. AACSB’s October 21 article on research intelligence makes a similar case for business schools: a ranking can show position, but leaders need measures that explain strengths, gaps, and possible investments.
The Kauffman Foundation’s Red Tail Academy story shows the same issue in a career pathway. Exposure and ambition matter, but students also need mentorship, credentials, practice, and an organization with enough capacity to keep the route open. Farnam Street’s October 18 Brain Food issue adds a psychological check: a disappointing result does not explain itself.
The useful question is not whether a measure looks impressive. It is whether the measure represents visible work, belongs to a decision owner, reveals the support needed, and triggers a review that can change the plan.
These sources include expert guidance, a business-education framework article, an institutional case feature, and a practitioner newsletter. They support a practice for inspection and review. They do not prove universal causal results or general outcomes from one case.
