Give Your Experiment Protected Working Time
[!quote] Field Note Permission to experiment becomes useful when people know which work can wait.
[!summary] The Reader Promise Choose one small team experiment, protect the time it needs, and agree on how people will return to regular work.
The Field Note
[!example] Try this Choose one experiment and put its protected time, coverage, and review date on the same page.
An employee has an idea worth testing. The manager agrees, but every urgent request still lands on that employee’s desk. The experiment has permission without time.
An October 14 Harvard Business Review case describes a different arrangement at OCP, a Moroccan fertilizer company. Approved ventures had dedicated teams outside normal reporting lines. Employees could work full-time on a venture. The authors describe how this protected fragile ideas from pressure for short-term profit.
The case gives a concrete example of protected work. It does not prove that every team needs a separate venture unit. One author leads OCP, and two disclose paid relationships with the company. Treat the account as a design example, not an independent test of results.
Before your next experiment, agree on three things. Which regular task will someone else cover? How much time is protected? When will the team decide whether to continue or stop?
Start with a small, reversible test. A student project might need one shared work session. A business pilot might need a few hours each week. Protect enough time to learn, and explain who will cover the displaced work.
Watch for a simple failure: the same employee doing both jobs after hours. If that happens, the promised protection has not reached the work.
Mental Model Lens
[!tip] Thinking Tool Mental model: The Nature of Power (August 2, 2026)
Useful idea: Reliability reduces the uncertainty that other people must carry.
Short quote: “Reliable people don’t just keep promises, they remove uncertainty from other people’s lives.”
Use today: Name what your team can count on during the test.
This is a practitioner thinking prompt, not evidence that the practice works in every setting.
Use It Today
[!question] For Students Ask your project team to reserve one shared work session. Agree on what each person will finish before it.
[!question] For Managers And Founders Name the work that will move before granting pilot time. Check whether that coverage actually happens.
[!question] For Educators And Advisors Give an experimental assignment a clear time budget and a review point. Ask students which other demands compete with it.
