Show the Conditions Before You Ask

[!quote] Field Note A promise becomes usable when people can see the conditions behind it.

[!summary] The Reader Promise Learn how to test whether an automated tool, funding promise, or learning practice shows the conditions people need to trust and use it.

The Field Note

[!example] Show the Conditions Before You Ask Before adopting a tool or making a promise, write the input, resource condition, judgment owner, observable output, and response path.

The Associated Press lists a regulatory fine involving automated suspensions of driver accounts. The World Bank describes SME finance as an ecosystem shaped by policy, institutions, digital infrastructure, and lender capacity. AACSB argues that students need independent reasoning before intensive AI use. Inside Higher Ed lists a conditional tuition-freeze announcement. It shows that an affordability promise depends on timing and conditions.

These examples do not prove the full legal facts, that a finance program will succeed, that an AI-preparation proposal improves performance, or that a tuition policy will be implemented as intended. They support a narrower practice: make the conditions behind a promise visible before treating the promise as evidence. Farnam Street’s Reciprocity model adds a useful question. What response does this action make more likely?
